Attacking Facebook and Instagram

What are the real Terms and Conditions? Here are the most shocking that we found:

Kat and Antonia sat down to read through the entire Instagram Terms and Conditions that we all so frequently ignore and just hit "accept". After the changing hands of ownership of Instagram to become a part of the Facebook organisation, there have been a lot of shocking changes. As globalisation and interconnectedness increase, the concepts of our privacy online is diminished.

  • Now that Facebook own Instagram "data shared by the user is collected and used in Facebook Products"

  • They collect your all of you account sign in information and anything that you "message or communicate with others" such as your location, the location of a photo or even the date it was taken.

  • Instagram can record camera settings and what you see through your camera, even things that aren't posted or saved

  • There are systems in place not just to record this content but the analyse the "context" too it; chat histories? linked accounts? search histories?

  • Facebook and Instagram use information such as the people, pages, accounts and hashtags you are connected to in order to see what online platform or organisations you may be a part of, or eve suggest people you might potentially know. when we think about it, this is frightening.

  • The new data policy from Instagram will include information about facial recognition, though the app is not using this technology yet. Instagram says, “If we introduce it, we’ll let you know and give you a choice.” Facebook is however, using such technology though users have the option of signing out of it from the social network. It adds, “the face-recognition templates we create may constitute data with special protections under the laws of your country."

  • if you make financial transactions, Instagram and Facebook can save your credit and debit card information as well as your billing and shipping addresses and contact details!

  • The data policy notes, “We also collect contact information if you choose to upload, sync or import it from a device (such as an address book or call log or SMS log history), which we use for things like helping you and others find people you may know and for the other purposes listed below.” These aren't even details that are explicitly stored within the app.

  • Finally the app is collecting device information which includes the computer, phone, connected TV used when accessing Instagram and its products. Information such as the operating system, hardware and software versions, battery level, signal strength, available storage space, browser type, app and file names and types, and plugins are also collected, says the data policy.

  • Information from both Facebook and Instagram is shared across all shared Facebook/Instagram products and devices. Emphasis is on devices here: all of this intimate knowledge about you can be easily accessed by any server or person or computer across Facebook and Instagram offices should they chose; its not always just faceless binary code.
